Southern Illinois Veteran Aid and Attendance Attorneys
If you are a veteran – or the surviving widow of a veteran – who receives a VA pension, you may be entitled to additional payments from the VA if you require assistance in the home or reside in a nursing home or similar long-term care facility.
The VA provides additional pension payments to those who qualify for Aid & Attendance (A&A) or Housebound benefits. At SI Elder Law, LLC, we respect the sacrifices veterans have made for our country. We work to honor those sacrifices by helping veterans to receive the maximum payments they deserve from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Veterans and veterans’ widows may also qualify for an additional benefit to help pay the cost of nursing home, assisted living or in-home assistance. For many veterans, the cost of long-term care can be difficult to afford. Our team of attorneys can navigate the complex Veteran Aid & Attendance program and assist you in the application process.

Qualifying for Veteran Aid & Attendance Benefits in Southern Illinois
Veterans must have served during a period of war, have a discharge other than dishonorable, and must be spending their income on non-reimbursed medical expenses. There are also asset limitations.
According to the VA, Aid & Attendance payments are available to qualified pension recipients who meet at least one of these criteria:
- Require help from someone else to take care of everyday personal functions, such as bathing, eating, getting dressed, going to the bathroom, adjusting prosthetic devices, or staying safe from hazards in the daily environment.
- Are bedridden, meaning that a disability keeps you confined to be bed, other than for temporary treatment.
- Are a resident of a nursing home or similar long-term care facility because of physical or mental impairments.
- Have corrected vision limited to 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes, or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less.
The VA also provides increased Housebound pension payments to qualified veterans pension recipients who “are substantially confined to your immediate premises because of permanent disability” – in other words, if you must stay in your home most of the time because of your impairments.
An Illinois Veteran Benefits Attorney is Ready to Help
The VA has stringent asset limitations and income requirements. In the shortest amount of time, SI Elder Law helps our clients protect their assets as well as meeting the asset and income requirements.
If you are a veteran or a widow of a veteran you may be able to receive additional benefits from the VA if you need assistance with your activities of daily living (bathing, walking, eating, toileting, dressing). The benefit is a special monthly pension called “Aid & Attendance.” This benefit is based on a person’s assets and income. If approved for Aid & Attendance, the person will receive additional monthly income to help pay for the cost of health care. Most of our clients receive the maximum benefit which ranges between $1,000 and $1,900 a month of additional income to help pay for long-term care needs.
