Carbondale, Illinois

With a population of over 26,000, Carbondale is one of the largest cities in the “Little Egypt” region of Southern Illinois. Carbondale is located about 17 miles west of SI Elder Law’s office in Marion. Illinois State Route 13 connects the two towns. U.S. Highway 51, a major north-south route, intersects Route 13 in Carbondale. Carbondale is home to Southern Illinois University, which houses the University Museum, the African American Museum and the Science Center. Nearby attractions include the Shawnee National Forest, the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge and Giant City State Park. The city hosts the Big Muddy Film Festival, the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta, the Southern Illinois Irish Festival, the Lights Fantastic parade, and other festivals throughout the year.

Mount Vernon, Illinois

Located at the junction of Interstates 64 and 57, Mount Vernon is about 42 miles north of SI Elder Law’s office in Marion – a quick drive down I-57 from Mount Vernon. The “King City” is home to more than 15,000 residents, and serves as the county seat of Jefferson County. The 5th District Appellate Court is located in Mount Vernon in a 19th century courthouse that originally housed the Southern Division of the Illinois Supreme Court. The structure, where Abraham Lincoln argued cases as a lawyer, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Major employers in Mount Vernon include Continental Tires and distribution centers for NAPA auto parts, National Railway Equipment and Walgreens. A number of smaller industrial concerns are also located in Mount Vernon. Attractions in the city include the Cedarhurst arts complex, the Jefferson County Historical Museum and Village and the C.E. Brehm Memorial Public Library.

Herrin, Illinois

Less than 10 miles northwest of SI Elder Law’s Marion office, Herrin is home to nearly 13,000 residents. Those traveling from Herrin can reach our office via a number of routes, including Illinois State Routes 148 and 13 or Routes 4 and 37. Herrin is the hometown of baseball player Ray Chapman, country singer David Lee Murphy and basketball coach Steve Fisher. Herrin is known for cultural events such as Herrinfesta Italiana, an event that celebrates the town’s Italian heritage each Memorial Day weekend.

Harrisburg, Illinois

The city of Harrisburg is about 23 miles east of SI Elder Law’s Marion office, reachable via Route 13. With a population of nearly 10,000, Harrisburg is the county seat of Saline County and is known as the “Gateway to the Shawnee National Forest.” In addition to Route 13, U.S. Highway 45 and State Routes 145 and 34 also converge on the city. Harrisburg was once one of the leading distribution hubs for bituminous coal in the Midwest. Its economy, for the most part, no longer relies on coal. Due to the city’s geographic location, it has endured a number of natural disasters over the decades, including floods, tornadoes and even earthquakes. For example, much of the southern part of town was destroyed or damaged by an EF4 tornado that struck in February 2012, killing 8 and injuring 110. Recent economic development initiatives have included the construction of retail, entertainment, cultural and dining destinations.

Anna, Illinois

Situated about 30 miles southeast of Marion, the trip between Anna and SI Elder Law’s office is an easy drive on I-57. Anna is located in Union County and has a population of over 4,000. The town is closely tied to its neighbor, Jonesboro, which serves as the county seat of Union County. Jonesboro is known for hosting the third of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Anna is the home of the C.L. Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center. Nearby attractions include the Brown Barrens Nature Preserve, the Trail of Tears State Forest, the Union County State Fish and Wildlife Area

Benton, Illinois

Just 20 miles north of SI Elder Law’s office in Marion, Benton is quick drive on I-57. The county seat of Franklin County, Benton has over 7,000 residents. The 19th century Italianate courthouse is a focal point in the city, situated on the Public Square. Historically, Benton’s economy was based on coal, railroads and farming. Benton is known as the site of the last public hanging in Illinois, when a gangster was hanged on the gallows next to the jail in 1926. The jail is now a museum, and a replica of the gallows and hangman’s noose are on display. Another claim to fame for Benton stems from a visit by George Harrison of The Beatles in 1963. His sister was living in the town at that time. The house where he stayed is now operated as the Hard Day’s Nite Bed and Breakfast.
